Newport Beach, CA – Crossing Guard Injured in Crash at Eastbluff Elementary School

Newport Beach, CA (February 16, 2024) – A school crossing guard as injured after being struck by a car in Newport Beach on Tuesday morning, February 13th. The crash took place around 8:00 a.m. at the intersection of Vista Del Oro and Vista Roma near Eastbluff Elementary School.

Police say that Kathy Japes was working at the school when a Volkswagen SUV ran a stop sign and struck her while she was standing at the intersection. The Newport Beach Police Department determined that the Volkswagen was traveling approximately 20 miles per hour at the time of the accident. Rescue workers responded to the area and treated Japes for serious injuries, including a broken hip, pelvis, and shoulder. She also suffered a bruised lung and a concussion in the collision. She was taken to a local hospital for further medical care. There is no word on the identity of the Volkswagen driver at this time. No other injuries were reported. Police have not said what charges will be filed in connection with the accident. An investigation remains ongoing and no further information is available.
